Rabbit Baiting

All landholders have a responsibility to control rabbits on their property under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (Vic). There are a number of methods available to landholders to achieve successful long term rabbit control including baiting, fumigation, harbor removal, fencing and warren destruction. A combination of these methods should be used, as one method alone will not suffice.  spreading weeds, also degrading gardens and the environment and reducing the chances of survival of our native flora and fauna.

All landholders have a responsibility to control rabbits on their property under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (Vic). There are a number of methods available to landholders to achieve successful long term rabbit control including baiting, fumigation, harbour removal, fencing and warren destruction. A combination of these methods should be used, as one method alone will not suffice.

For effective control, there needs to be a coordinated effort amongst neighbours, otherwise treated areas can become rapidly re-infested. Rabbits don’t respect boundaries so they are everyone’s rabbits !

Baiting rabbits using Pindone-treated carrots is one of the most cost effective and environmentally responsible methods available to reduce the rabbit population.

To achieve the best possible results when using Pindone carrots:

  • Identify the areas where rabbits are feeding and place the Pindone carrots in these areas. (Use a spotlight at night time to see how many rabbits there are and where they are feeding.)
  •  Use Pindone carrots during the times of the year when there isn’t much other food around for rabbits to eat, i.e. Summer or Autumn.
  •  Estimate the density of your rabbit population and order the right amount of Pindone carrots accordingly (see below)
  •  Apply the Pindone carrots on three separate nights about 3-5 days apart, taking care to follow the detailed instructions provided with the carrots.
  • Check and dispose of dead rabbits everyday while baiting.
  • Cover or remove remaining bait each morning after laying bait the night before.
